Frank Lampard opted against starting young midfielder Mason Mount for the game against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

The Chelsea boss however went for a midfield trio of N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic, with Mount dropping to the bench.

Lampard has explained that his decision was purely tactical as he believes it was the best starting lineup to face the reigning champions on their home ground.

“It’s a nice problem to have. Mason has been so good for us. There will be areas of rotation,” Lampard told Sky Sports before the game.

“It was a decision based on our opponents. If needed, he can come on and make that impression.”

Lampard also revealed that he watched last season’s 6-0 defeat to City and prepared his players for this game.

“I know about the game last season, I watched it. I trust the players, though, and it’s up to the players to implement it (Chelsea’s plan),” he added.
