Chelsea vs Ajax Champions League tie on Tuesday night will go down as a classic as the Blues came back from 4-1 to draw the game 4-4, and it could almost have been a 5-4 win for Chelsea but VAR ruled out Cesar Azpilicueta’s strike.
The game had everything from VAR drama to penalties, own goals, red cards and exhilarating attacking play. At the end, Chelsea came back from 4-1 to draw the game 4-4.
Chelsea manager Frank Lampard hailed his side’s spirit to come back from 4-1 down and snatch a point, and the Blues boss hailed four senior team players for pushing the comeback for Chelsea.
Lampard named his captain and vice-captain Cesar Azpilicueta and Jorginho, as well as Mateo Kovacic and Willian as the players responsible for the sensational comeback.
Lampard said: “Take VAR out of it, and the red cards. What I have to think about is us. The spirit we showed, the character, is something I loved and I think the fans loved. We need to tighten up for sure, but with that spirit we can go places.
“For a performance like today you need characters, personalities. It would have been easy to turn it in at 4-1 down and give it up, but we never did. The experienced players drove the team: Jorginho, Kovacic, Willian, Azpilicueta. Those players really pushed tonight and I loved it.”
