According to The Athletic via The Sun, the club is concerned Marcos Alonso’s commitment levels have dropped off as a result of the bumper £100,000-per-week contract the club awarded him last October.
Alonso played a key role in Chelsea’s most recent Premier League title success in 2017 but the Spaniard has struggled to reach those heights this season.
The 28-year-old hasn’t been involved since being substituted in Chelsea’s 4-4 draw with Ajax in the Champions League in early November.
According to the report, the Chelsea dressing room have grown frustrated with Alonso’s attitude and Frank Lampard appears to have closed the door on the former Sunderland man.
The emergence of Reece James this season has seen Alonso struggle to make match day squads with the Spaniard now behind Cesar Azpilicueta and Emerson Palmieri in pecking order at left-back.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard recently admitted Alonso’s omission from the team in recent weeks was simply down to selection choices.
Lampard revealed: “I have selection choices in different positions. We need a squad.
“Some players will be disappointed, but we need everyone.”
