The left-back area is one key position that Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is keen on strengthening. The Blues have been linked with a move for Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell, but a January move for the Foxes left-back might seem impossible.
Meanwhile, Lampard has Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri to choose from at the moment, and it just seems that none have been able to cement their place in the team.
Emerson started out as Lampard’s first choice at the start of the season, but injury to the Italy international gave room for Marcos Alonso who impressed massively. Alonso then performed poorly in the 4-4 draw against Ajax and had to be taken off at half-time. He hadn’t featured again since that game until last weekend’s massive win over Tottenham.
Alonso was outstanding in his favoured left wing-back role, which has now brought back the debate whether he should be the number one in that role or Emerson Palmieri.
Reddit user u/Hudson-Odoi10 gathered stats from the Premier League’s official website, and it suggests that Alonso has just been the better player this season.
