Chelsea boss Frank Lampard played a 3-4-3 system against Southampton, but the Blues boss had to do it without Marcos Alonso.

Alonso is more effective in the left wing-back position but missed the game against the Saints. Reece James could also have gotten a start against Southampton after Cesar Azpilicueta’s injury against Tottenham.

However, Lampard has now revealed that Alonso and James couldn’t feature because of injury.

He said: “Marcos Alonso picked up a muscle injury against Tottenham but hopefully he’ll be back for Arsenal. Reece James won’t – he has an ankle issue at the moment.”

Mason Mount also didn’t start the game after an impressive performance against Tottenham, and Lampard also revealed that the young midfielder was ill.

He said: “Mason Mount has been feeling under the weather a bit in the last few days but he came on and we looked brighter in the second half but still gave them a couple of counter-attacks.”
