Frank Lampard tried to freshen his squad against West Ham during the weekend as the Blues boss gave rest to Cesar Azpilicueta and Willian. Fringe players like Pedro and Olivier Giroud were given a rare start, and they both failed to perform.

Frank Lampard has been criticised for his line-up in that game, but Chelsea star Christian Pulisic has come in defence of his manager and has revealed that Chelsea have quality players who can come in and do the job.

“Of course, he [Abraham] has done well for us this season but we have other guys who can step up,” Pulisic said. “Oli trains great and he’s a great player – he was a bit unfortunate so we’ll see.

“I mean we have different guys who can come in, we had the fresh guys come in. We have a full squad and a very fit squad so it shouldn’t be an issue.”

Meanwhile, ESPN pundit Steve Nicol has revealed that Chelsea do not have enough squad depth to go into the Champions League for the rest of the season.

“I think for Chelsea the problems will start if they go deep into the Champions League,” Nicol told ESPN.

“At their best, they’re capable of scoring goals.

“When it gets to the knockout stages, they could win games, which I don’t think they can handle.

“I think we saw today when they’re forced to make changes, they’re not particularly deep.

“Big time [the transfer embargo will impact them].”
