Frank Lampard’s Chelsea struggles started since the return of N’Golo Kante from injury as the Chelsea boss has not yet known how to utilise his midfielders in the middle of the park.
With Kante out injured, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic formed a great partnership in midfield, and upon Kante’s return, the Frenchman also combined well with Kovacic, with Jorginho missing the game through suspension as Chelsea defeated Crystal Palace 2-0.
However, Chelsea have struggled since that game, with the Blues having won just one out of their last five league games.
Frank Lampard has often tried to rotate his midfield but the result hasn’t been too good, and one player who is undroppable in midfield is Mateo Kovacic.
Surprisingly, the Croatian has won the hearts of the Chelsea supporters this season after a very average performance last term.
Check out some of his stats below
Kovacic has completed more passes than any other midfielder in the Premier League this season, and he is able to retain possession in very tight situations.
Kovacic’s passing accuracy of 90 per cent is incredible because he tries to pass the ball through dangerous and thin lines.
The 25-year-old also has the ability to drive at opponents from midfield and out of our midfield three, he’s the one who can break the lines of defence easily with his pass and skills.
Kovacic also has a special ability to penetrate the opposition midfield when running with the ball at his feet. Kovacic ranks among the top six players in the Premier League for completed dribbles but the five players above him on the list are all wingers, and his should count more as it’s more difficult running through the middle with the ball compared to the flanks.
Interestingly, Kovacic has now added goals to his game and if he continues like this, he’d grow into a world-class midfielder.
