Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was certainly missing quality play from his wing-backs in the defeat to Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day.
Cesar Azpilicueta as right wing-back didn’t seem at his best after an excellent performance in the same position against Tottenham. Emerson Palmieri looked below par against the Saints and couldn’t contribute to the team’s attacking play even as a wing-back.
Chelsea youngster Reece James as well as Marcos Alonso were missing in action due to injury. James had sustained an ankle injury, while Alonso’s problem was muscular.
Frank had revealed that Alonso will be fit to play Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, but James still remains out.
Speaking at his post-match news conference on Boxing Day, Lampard said: “Marcos Alonso picked up a muscle injury against Tottenham but hopefully he’ll be back for Arsenal.
“Reece James won’t [be fit to face Arsenal]. He has an ankle issue at the moment.”
