Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has hailed his side for following his tactics that aided their victory over Chelsea.

Goals from Michael Obafemi and Nathan Redmond sealed a 2-0 win for the away side, and Hasenhuttl believes it was because his players followed his instructions.

“I think the players will tell me that they did exactly what I demanded them to do,” Hasenhuttl said. “I have been critical that we need to make this the next step in our game.

“We can do this, but we at times aren’t brave enough. Especially when we’re in the lead because you have to feel that you can lose something. Especially in that moment, it must be the next step in our development that we can do that to have something to win. This was a good signal for me.”

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard used a 3-4-3 system to defeat Tottenham last weekend as Lampard’s tactics was hailed as a masterclass. But his system didn’t work against Southampton.

Lampard said in his post match press conference: “I felt we controlled a lot of the first half. We had a lot of the ball, which you tend to do with three at the back, but then when you go down 1-0 you’re thinking about getting an attacking player on the pitch.”
