Duncan Ferguson made an instant impact as the Everton legend guided Everton to a 3-1 victory over Chelsea at Goodison Park in his first game in charge.

Ferguson was appointed as interim manager on Wednesday following the sack of Marco Silva following Wednesday’s Merseyside derby thrashing at Liverpool that had left the Toffees in the relegation zone.

Speaking after guiding Everton to a surprise victory over Chelsea, Ferguson said: “It was an unbelievable atmosphere for myself but it’s the players who need to take the pride and the praise. We were just trying to get the communication working.

“I thought they were fantastic; we really got the players working well together. To get the early goal was really important. When you are leading a team and the fans need you to get three points, it is so much more important than anything else.”
