Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has urged Chelsea to make a move for Brighton defender Lewis Dunk.
The 28-year-old has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea reportedly interested in the centre-back, and Nicol believes that the Brighton skipper will be a worthy buy by Chelsea.
While exclaiming that £50m might be a bit too high, Nicol believes that the Englishman will bring the kind of quality Virgil van Dijk brought to Liverpool after his big money move from Southampton.
“Look what Van Dijk has done for Liverpool… I have no problem [with big-money signings],” the ex-Scotland international said on ESPN FC.
“The prices seem steep at the time, but if you’re telling me Lewis Dunk is going to cost £50million… those clubs have done some good business with what they’ve signed.
“Chelsea right now need players to come in and hit the ground running. If you go out and get someone from outside the Premier League, you’re not quite sure what you’re going to get.
“You know Lewis Dunk is going to be reliable, he’s going to be strong, he’s not gonna be flashy. You know exactly what you’re going to get. He’s experienced, he’s 28-years-old, he’s in his prime, it wouldn’t be a bad signing. I think they need strengthening, but still, £50million seems a little pricey.”
