According to Jason Cundy, Chelsea legend John Terry and not Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk is the Premier League’s best ever centre-back.

Arsenal legend Martin Keown recently sparked controversy by claiming Van Dijk is the best centre-back in the Premier League’s history but Cundy doesn’t agree with Keown.

Cundy told talkSPORT: “Virgil van Dijk is a complete defender, right now he is the most complete defender.

“But the only thing I would say is he joined Liverpool at 26 and he’s now 28… John Terry was captain of Chelsea and lifting Premier League titles at 24!

“This was a player who was doing it at the very, very top and much younger. I think that has to come into it, doesn’t it?”

In 19 years in a Blues shirt, Terry lifted five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups, the Champions League and the Europa League.

Van Dijk has a lot of catching up to do after winning just one Champions League trophy with Liverpool.

Indeed Cindy is very right. Terry has been the best defender that that any team has ever had in the premier league. I think comparing Terry to Dijk at this stage is unfair looking at what Terry has achieved in winning trophies in the premier league.

  3. Except Terry has been with a worldclass team from a young age on. If terry went through the same club routes as van dijk did, no way would he have achieved the same compared to when he was with chelsea
