According to Daily Express, Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur have contacted representatives of Chelsea winger Willian regarding a January swoop.
Willian is out of contract in the summer and Mourinho believes he can persuade the Brazilian to join Tottenham. Mourinho and Willian enjoyed a good relationship during Mourinho’s time as Chelsea boss.
Transfer expert Ian McGarry told Reach PLC’s Transfer Window Podcast, according to Daily Express: “This is a very sensible and almost logical move for Tottenham Hotspur.
“They have contacted the representatives of Willian, the Chelsea winger, he’s now 31, he’s in the last six months of his contract at Stamford Bridge.
“There have been negotiations in regards to keeping him. I think Lampard is relatively keen to have him re-sign because he’s used him a lot this season and he has actually produced some exceptional performances but Willian wants security in terms of the contract.
“He’s not willing to accept the terms of a one-year extension which Chelsea follow this rule that over 30s only get a one-year offer.
“Tottenham would certainly provide, at this moment in time, a very viable option, and potentially a two-and-a-half year contract.
“Remember Willian was effectively a player Chelsea stole from under the noses of Tottenham when he signed for the Stamford Bridge club.
“He had a medical at Tottenham but then a certain agent offered him to Chelsea and said ‘you’re missing out on something special here’ and Chelsea immediately came in and literally got him a car to take him across London to have a medical at Chelsea and he signed.
“The rest is history as they say. But Willian is someone who would certainly add a lot to Tottenham’s attack in terms of his intelligence, his tactical nous but also his pace and delivery which are exceptional.
“His goal and assist rate is impressive as is scoring considering he plays wide on the right or left. So Mourinho is very keen to take Willian.”
