Chelsea right-back Reece James limped off with 15 minutes remaining at St James Park following a collision with Ciaran Clark.
The 20 year old winced in pain as he received treatment, prompting fears he could be out injured for a long time.
Ahead of Tuesday’s Premier League game against Arsenal, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has revealed James is in contention to play against Arsenal.
Lampard: “He’s got an injury to the back of his knee area, but it’s not as bad as it could have been or we maybe first thought.
“He’s in contention for tomorrow but it will be a tight call to see how it settles down in the next 24 hours.”
Asked if he had feared the worst when James sustained the issue at St James’ Park, Lampard added: “Yeah, a little bit, because he had injuries at the start of the season. But now it seems it’s not as bad as it could have been.
“I won’t absolutely count my chickens but hopefully he’ll be OK for tomorrow, and if not, then the weekend.”
According to talkSPORT, scan results showed James only suffered some minor bruising to his knee as a result of the heavy landing.
