Chelsea are yet to make any significant signing in the January transfer window, as the Blues have been unable to strengthen the squad ahead of this tasking phase of the season.
Former Liverpool star Steve Nicol has now urged Chelsea to try and seal a transfer deadline day signing of Mertens, and he believes that the 32-year-old Belgian will be a valuable addition to the team and contribute more than the likes of Pedro, Willian, Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi, especially in terms of goalscoring and creation.
Mertens has scored 118 goals and added 71 assists in his last 304 club outings, and represents a huge threat in front of goal.
Nicol told ESPN FC: “Perfect,” he said of Mertens’ potential switch.
“You know, experienced guy, that’s what they need in my opinion going forward.
“You can’t rely on Willian, you can’t rely on Pedro, [Christian] Pulisic can’t get himself fit, [Callum] Hudson-Odoi isn’t doing enough, Mason Mount has kind of run out of juice.
“This team is screaming for some experience up front. I think he fits the bill absolutely.”
He went on: “All those ones I’ve mentioned aren’t scoring goals, that’s the whole point.
“Regardless of whether they play in the same position, the reason they’re looking to bring somebody in, not only to back up [Tammy] Abraham, but somebody to put the ball in the net.
“They ain’t scoring, so why not? They need somebody else that’s going to put the ball in the net.”
Reports claim Chelsea have submitted a formal bid of £4.7 million for the 32 year old forward, but it has been rejected by Napoli.
