The transfer ban placed on the club was lifted back in December, thus permitting the club to partake in the January transfer window.

The Blues have been linked with a number of possible transfer targets, but so far, Chelsea aren’t close to making any signings to the first team.

Transfer expert Ian McGarry has revealed that Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is keen on strengthening his attack and his defence, and maintained that the most important aspect of the team for Lampard to strengthen is the attack.

Tammy Abraham has done a good job so far with 13 Premier League goals, but there’s still room for competition in that position, with Olivier Giroud close to an exit and Michy Batshuayi has also been linked with a move away from the club.

McGarry said on the Transfer Window podcast: “We know that the first priority is a striker who can back up Tammy Abraham.

“That is a position as I’ve said that they’re yet to fill, indeed it looks like Olivier Giroud will go to Inter Milan leaving only Michy Batshuayi as the recognised senior backup to Abraham – there’s interest in Batshuayi as well.”

Chelsea have been linked with former academy star Nathan Ake and Brighton captain Lewis Dunk in the centre-back position, and McGarry believes that is the second area Lampard will be keen to strengthen.

“The second priority is a centre-half, he wants someone who can command a defence which has looked inconsistent at best with regards to conceding goals, especially at set-pieces,” McGarry added.

“They had a resounding result against Burnley at Stamford Bridge but that was only their second win at home in five matches in the Premier League.”
