Despite Frank Lampard’s desire to strengthen Chelsea’s attacking options, the Blues are yet to sign a forward in the January transfer window.
Chelsea have made moves for several forwards this January including Timo Werner of RB Leipzig, Edinson Cavani of PSG and Krzysztof Piatek of AC Milan.
According to The Telegraph, Chelsea have made a late move to sign Napoli striker Dries Mertens.
The report claims Lampard wants the Blues to complete a move for Mertens because the Belgian international can play through the middle or from wide positions and is comfortable in a front three or in a pair.
The 32 year old will also be able to play instead of Tammy Abraham or alongside Abraham from one of the wide positions, which would give Lampard far greater options.
Belgian international Mertens has scored 118 goals for Napoli over seven seasons at the club.
