According to The Telegraph, Chelsea turned down the chance to sign Venezuelan striker Salomon Rondon on transfer deadline day despite failing to make any signing in January.

The Blues were offered a late loan deal for the Dalian Yifang striker but turned it down as the Chelsea board felt the 30 year old ex-Newcastle United striker won’t improve the squad.

Rondon has scored five goals in 11 appearances in the Chinese Super League.

Meanwhile, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was disappointed with the club’s failure to sign any player during the January transfer window.

Lampard said: “We probably become the underdogs and the outsiders because the teams around us have strengthened. It’s a fact.

“Every time I look at the TV, a player has signed for another club.

“Manchester United have signed a world-class player and Sheffield United are making fantastic signings.

“Tottenham have signed a few — and they’re not far behind us.

“We have now missed two windows — and the fact we missed the last one made this a bit more crucial.”
