Chelsea youngster Ethan Ampadu has struggled for game time while on loan at RB Leipzig, and the Blues even considered withdrawing him during the January transfer window.
The 19-year-old was then given a surprise start as he slotted in the middle of a back three for Leipzig’s first leg round of 16 clash against Tottenham in place of Dayot Upamecano who was unavailable due to suspension.
Before the game, Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann told BT Sport: “At the end it is the same, we all have injured players, both Tottenham and RB Leipzig. Today, Upamecano was suspended so we have to replace him, with Ampadu, a Welsh guy, I think he will perform well.
“I think he will enjoy the game, he lives in London now and I think he has a lot of friends in the stadium, and he will perform well.”
Former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas hailed Ampadu’s game and also joked about his haircut as he ripped of his locks in December.
He tweeted: “Great seeing @ethanamp4 starting and playing in such a big games. Good to see him a better haircut as well.”
