Chelsea were heavily linked with moves for Dries Mertens, Edinson Cavani, Ben Chilwell and Jadon Sancho during the January transfer window but failed to complete any signing, which left Chelsea boss Frank Lampard frustrated.

Lampard’s cousin Jamie Redknapp has revealed why Chelsea failed to complete any signing in January.

According to Redknapp, Chelsea tried to sign players during the January transfer window and only failed because teams were reluctant to do business midway through the season.

Redknapp told Sky Sports: [Cavani] is 32 now, so if you got him on loan then that’s a good deal, but if you’re buying him you’re not the Cavani of Napoli a few years ago.

“They were trying to buy players, I saw [former Chelsea goalkeeper and current technical and performance advisor] Petr Cech yesterday and he was talking about trying to get players in, but the problem is no one wants to sell in January.

“Teams are either challenging to get in the Champions League or trying to win titles so all the great players who Chelsea want to sign and the fans want to see are not available.

“Clubs just don’t want to sell players in January.”
