Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour was handed his first Premier League start against Everton after his man of the match performance in the 2-0 FA Cup victory over Liverpool on Tuesday.

The 18 year old set a Chelsea Premier League record following his start against Everton.

Gilmour became the first Scottish outfield player to start a Premier League match for Chelsea since Steve Clarke in May 1998, with that match taking place over three years before Gilmour was born.

Asked prior to kick-off if it was an easy decision to hand Gilmour his first Premier League start, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard said: “On one hand, yes, because he deserves to play; on the other hand, we have injuries and suspensions in the same area.

“But I don’t want that to be the reason Billy is playing. Billy is playing because he has trained well all season. He played very well against Liverpool and I expect more of the same today.

“He’s young and I don’t want to heap too much on his shoulders but I believe in him and in the midfield.

“We’re young in there today but hopefully we’ll have a lot of energy and quality.”
