Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has revealed he did not expect to be still at Chelsea.
Giroud admitted he was keen on leaving Chelsea in January after failing to get much game time at the club during the first half of the season.
Speaking to French outlet Telefoot, Giroud said: “To be honest, I saw myself playing elsewhere.
“I had six tough months, which is why I wanted a change of scene to get back to playing and enjoying myself on the pitch, so I tried to leave in January.”
Meanwhile, Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has called Giroud an inferior player after the Chelsea striker replaced him in the France national team.
“This won’t take long,’ Benzema told French actor and comedian Thomas N’Gijol in an Instagram live video.
“You don’t confuse F1 with go karting. And I’m being kind. Next… and I know i’m F1.
“It works because he’s there. That’s all. It’s not going to be spectacular, it’s not going to be anything crazy but in his way you see more of a (Antoine) Griezmann or (Kylian) Mbappe because he will put the work in.
“Does everyone like that way of playing? I don’t know.”
