Former Liverpool and Manchester United striker Michael Owen has hailed the performance of Chelsea youngster Billy Gilmour as he was named man of the match yet again in Chelsea’s 4-0 win over Everton.
For Owen, it isn’t just about the youngster’s ability on the ball, he’s also in awe of his character as Gilmour has slotted into the team playing among experienced and older players like he has been in the team for years.
“It’s all about character isn’t it? if you can come into the team and feel part of it straight away then that’s what it’s all about,” Owen told Premier League Productions.
“A lot of these players have got the talent and they need the chance but sometimes they’re so overawed of playing with their heroes because they’ve been dreaming of playing with some of these for years and years.
“All of a sudden you’re telling them to give you the ball but that’s not as easy as it would seem. It takes a certain type of character to just come into the team and look as if he’s been there for years and he certainly has.”
Gilmour got his full Premier League debut against the Toffees in the absence of Jorginho and could get another playing opportunity this weekend as Chelsea visit Aston Villa, with Jorginho set to miss that game due to suspension.
