Former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has praised Chelsea youngster Billy Gilmour after his impressive performance in the 2-0 FA Cup victory over Liverpool on Tuesday night.
The 18 year old bossed the midfield from a deep-lying playmaker role and his performance was reminiscent of how his idol Cesc Fabregas used to play.
Asked on Twitter what he thought of Gilmour’s performance against Liverpool, Fabregas said: “Fantastic. Personality on the ball, intelligence in his decision making, always making angles to offer himself and has that bit of aggression in him which is very important specially in the Premier League.”
Fabregas also believes the young Scot has ‘real potential’.
He added: “When you have the quality but also the desire, the work ethic and the intelligence, then is when you can see real potential in a young player. He has all of that.”
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was also impressed with the performance of Gilmour against Liverpool.
Lampard said: “Well, I mean, what an incredible performance for a young player against the best team. When things are happening quickly around you and he was a calm head in that first five, 10 minutes.
“Straight away, you could see he had quality on the ball and wants to get the ball.
“He’s a throwback to the days of midfielders when I grew up. And people will say can you put your foot in? Yes. Can you make angles to always get the ball? Yes. Can you play the right pass and pick the simple one at the right time? Yes. And he’s got all that.
“People might look at him and see that he’s quite slight in his way but he’s huge in personality. Huge. So I’m absolutely delighted for him. He deserves everything. He deserves man of the match, he deserves people talking about him. I’m delighted for him and his family because it’s a big day for them.”
