Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes is close to joining Chelsea after the French club accepted Chelsea’s €35 million bid for the Brazilian defender.
So why is Chelsea boss Frank Lampard keen on signing a centre-back despite having Antonio Rudiger, Kurt Zouma, Fikayo Tomori and Andreas Christensen at the club?
Lampard is keen on strengthening Chelsea’s defence after the Blues let in 39 goals in the league this season – the second highest in the top 10.
It is believed Chelsea could have been higher up the Premier League table if we had defended better.
All of Chelsea’s four centre-backs are right-footed and signing Gabriel Magalhaes makes sense to Lampard as the Brazilian is left-footed.
Lampard also got the opportunity to watch the Brazilian at close range twice when Chelsea played Lille in the Champions League and the Chelsea boss was impressed with the performance of the Brazilian centre-back.
Lampard wants Chelsea playing out of the back and Magalhaes has proven to be composed in possession.
Magalhaes is also good in the air. The Brazilian has won 64 per cent of his aerial battles and at 6ft 3′, he will prove an effective force both defensively and offensively at set-pieces.
Lampard wants his defence to push high and play in the opposition’s half and having a defender with pace is also key for this to work. Magalhaes has got pace. This will afford him some margin for error knowing he can make up the ground should he get caught out.
What are you thoughts about Chelsea’s decision to sign Gabriel Magalhaes?
