Chelsea FC today confirmed the death of legendary goalkeeper Peter Bonetti who passed on at 78.
The Blues legend had been suffering with a long illness before his passing, a club statement revealed.
Bonetti made over 492 appearances for Chelsea and was nicknamed ‘The Cat’ for his reflex saves, as he was one of the best players during his playing days.
Chelsea legends Petr Cech and John Terry led the tributes to the Chelsea legend.
Cech, who surpassed Bonetti’s Chelsea record of 208 clean sheets in 2014, posted on Twitter: “Really sad news for everyone from @ChelseaFC family.. RIP ‘The Cat’… Legend.”
John Terry, who made 492 appearances for the club, just three short of Bonetti, wrote on his Instagram account: “Absolutely heartbroken. RIP Peter Bonetti – @Chelseafc LEGEND & HERO. Sending my love and condolences to Peter’s family at this terribly sad time. A true gentleman.”
Chelsea FC took to Twitter to announce the passing of Bonetti and hailed him as one of the best players to have featured for the club.
“One of Chelsea Football Club’s greatest ever players,” read the caption.
“Rest in peace, Peter ‘the Cat’ Bonetti.”
