Former Fiorentina captain Alessandro Gamberini has claimed he rejected the chance to join Chelsea in Jose Mourinho’s first spell as Chelsea boss.
“In the past, I was courted by some very competitive clubs, such as Inter and Mourinho’s Chelsea,” Gamberini told Radio Bruno.
“If I hadn’t renewed my contract with Fiorentina, I probably would’ve joined one of those teams.”
Gamberini signed an extension to his Fiorentina contract in August 2007, just a month before Mourinho was sacked as Chelsea boss.
Gamberini could live to regret the decision as with in three years of rejecting Chelsea, the Blues won another Premier League title and two FA Cups while he failed to win any trophy in his career.
He only made 9 Champions League appearances during his playing career and that could have been more if he had made the move to Stamford Bridge.
Meanwhile, Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho has named former Chelsea striker Diego Costa as the toughest opponent he has faced.
“The most difficult players I’ve faced are Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Kylian Mbappe – all of them are so good and they cause a lot of problems to defenders,” Fernandinho said.
“But for me, one of the most difficult guys I’ve faced was Diego Costa when he was with Chelsea. He was in good shape. I hope I can face them again.”
