Steven Gerrard is a football legend in his own right, but the Liverpool legend will always be reminded of his famous slip against Chelsea that cost the Reds a Premier League title back in 2014, as Demba Ba capitalised on it to help Chelsea to a 2-0 victory and end Liverpool’s title hopes.
Brendan Rodgers’ side needed seven points from their remaining three games to claim the club’s first-ever Premier League title, but that defeat afforded Manchester City the chance to go on and win the league.
However, Liverpool legend Steve Nicol doesn’t think Gerrard is to blame for that title loss.
He told ESPN FC: “Why does everybody say that cost them the title? They lost a game. Absolute nonsense.
“The point is that Steven Gerrard has slipped, you can argue all day whether that cost them the title, I would say no it didn’t.
“The fact is Gerrard was at Liverpool at the time and Liverpool hadn’t won the Premier League ever, that’s why it sticks in everybody’s memory.
“Quite frankly, it’s sad, this guy is talked about as arguably the best player Liverpool has ever had, I personally don’t believe that but a lot of people do, that’s how good this guy is.
“Unfortunately, most football supporters outside of Liverpool and outside of the football business think that when you mention the name Steven Gerrard that’s what comes up, that slip when Demba Ba ended up putting Chelsea ahead, I think it’s really sad.”
