According to The Athletic, Arsenal chose to sign Granit Xhaka after turning down a move for N’Golo Kante in the summer of 2016.
Then Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was keen on signing Kante, who had just helped Leicester City win the Premier League title, but the Gunners snubbed a move for Kante due to the size of agents’ fees involved.

After rejecting the chance to sign Kante, Arsenal went on to sign Xhaka from Borussia Moenchengladbach for £35 million.
Chelsea eventually signed Kante from Leicester City for around £32 million and Chelsea fans will be glad Arsenal snubbed a move for the Frenchman.
French club Paris Saint-Germain also rejected the chance to sign Kante in the summer of 2016 due to the amount of agent fees involved in the deal.
According to Football Leaks, Chelsea paid the agents involved in the Kante transfer a combined £10.6million. Gregory Dakad received £6.4 million and Abdelkarim Douis went away with £4.2 million.
While Kante has excelled at Chelsea and help the Blues win the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League, Xhaka has struggled to consistently make his mark at Arsenal.
