Dries Mertens had been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea since the January transfer window, and those rumours don’t seem to go away as the Belgian is still being linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.
Italian football agent Vincenzo Morabito, had claimed that Blues boss Frank Lampard is still keen on signing the 32-year-old and that the Chelsea boss calls him daily in order to seal a deal ahead of next season.
“Mertens had originally said he wanted to stay at Napoli, but then his lawyer started offering him to various international clubs, meaning something changed between the player and the Azzurri,” Vincenzo Morabito told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.
“I know this because I was working on the Olivier Giroud issue when he was meant to leave Chelsea in January, with a lucrative contract line up for Mertens.
“Chelsea have now extended Giroud’s contract as a precaution, but they are very interested in Mertens and Lampard is calling him almost every day. I can see Mertens going to Chelsea.”

Meanwhile, reputable journalist Kristof Terreur, who’s a tier 1 source for all Belgian players, has admitted Lampard is ‘very interested’ in securing a deal for Dries Mertens in the summer window, but denied that the Chelsea boss is on his case every day.
One major reason Mertens didn’t join Chelsea in January was because he wanted to break the record of being Napoli’s top scorer. Currently, he holds that record with Marek Hamsik, with 121 goals.
