Chelsea and Arsenal might be arch rivals, but the two have had a number of players switch between west and north London, much to the frustration of their fans.

The more recent club to have taken from the other side is the Gunners, having signed David Luiz last summer.

But it seems Arsenal are ready to make another steal again, as they are ready to pounce on Chelsea’s Brazilian star Willian, who will be a free agent at the end of the season.

Check out a number of top players who have made a direct switch between the two clubs.

1. Ashley Cole

Definitely the most high-profile transfer between the two clubs till this point. In the summer of 2006, Cole dumped Arsenal to sign for Chelsea on transfer deadline day. Cole who was part of the Arsenal Invincibles will eventually win another Premier League, four FA Cups and the Champions League with the Blues. He was dubbed ‘Cashley’ by Arsenal supporters following his move to Chelsea.

2. William Gallas

You can’t mention the Cole deal without talking about Gallas. Cole signed for Chelsea on 31 August 2006 for a fee of £5 million, with William Gallas being transferred from Chelsea to Arsenal as part of the same deal.

Chelsea got the better deal as Gallas failed to win a trophy during his four years at the north London club. Gallas will eventually play for Tottenham as well.

3. Cesc Fabregas

Cesc Fabregas spent eight years at Arsenal and was adored by the supporters and even went on to wear the captain’s armband before leaving the club for Barcelona in 2011. Fabregas returned to the Premier League in 2014 and won the league in his first season with Chelsea and another two seasons later.

Arsenal fans continued to boo Fabregas during his time at Chelsea as they saw him as a betrayer.

4. Petr Cech

The Chelsea legend spent 11 solid years at Stamford Bridge and was hailed as one of greatest goalkeepers the league has seen. He then moved to Arsenal in 2015 after losing his shirt to Thibaut Courtois. Chelsea fans would be unhappy to see him play for the Gunners, but the Blues okayed his decision.

5. Lassana Diarra

The Frenchman built a reputation for being a hardworking midfielder and played for top clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal, Marseille, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

Interestingly, he signed up for Chelsea in 2005 and spent two seasons at the club. He eventually left the Blues for Arsenal and played only one season with the Gunners.

Diarra spent only one season with Arsenal and he regretted it.

He told L’Equipe: “I proved to everybody that I was right to leave Arsenal. I went to Portsmouth and then I went to Real Madrid. So I was right. Honestly, what is the better club between Arsenal and Real Madrid?

“The coach who best understood me was Harry Redknapp at Portsmouth. Yet when I arrived at Portsmouth… I wondered where I had set foot. But the first time I met him, he told me: ‘You are a wounded animal, you. Come on, you are going to show them.'”

Olivier Giroud and David Luiz are two players who have swapped between the two sides in recent years, with Giroud signing for Chelsea and Luiz moving to Arsenal.

Which of the clubs have had the better deals – Chelsea or Arsenal?

On the balance of evidence, Chelsea has got the better deals: imagine Cole v Gallas, although both players were fairly decent, I would pick Cole. David Luiz v Giroud, I would pick Giroud any day, unfortunately Giroud didn’t get the recognition that he truly deserve at times. Arsenal can make up their loss if they can nick Willian, arguably one of the most intelligent players in the Premier League!
