Chelsea have been linked with Napoli forward Dries Mertens since the January transfer window, but the January deal didn’t work as the 33-year-old was keen to see out his contract with Napoli.
Mertens will be a free agent at the end of the season and HLN journalist Kristof Terreur, has admitted that Blues boss Frank Lampard is still keen on signing the Belgian.
“Situation unchanged for Dries Mertens: Inter still sniffing around, Chelsea very interested. He might have to wait for the end of the Serie A season to decide his future,” Terreur tweeted.
Terreur had revealed in a previous tweet: “Lampard likes him a lot, also because he can cover a few positions.”
Meanwhile, an eagle-eyed Chelsea fan has noticed that Frank Lampard follows Dries Mertens on Instagram.
Simon Phillips, the Chelsea blogger noticed that Frank Lampard follows Dries Mertens on Instagram, and the Blues boss do not follow too many people – a sign that he’s still keen on signing Mertens.
Some fans believe it is a clue that a deal is in the pipeline, with one saying: “Done Deal Maybe…”
And another replied: “Lamps is a big fan of his.”
Mertens turned 33 on May 6, and one will wonder why Chelsea would be keen on signing a player at that age.
