A couple of top Nigerian players have played in the Premier League over the years, with three former Nigerian internationals featuring for the Blues.
Celestine Babayaro, John Mikel Obi and Victor Moses are the three Nigerian players who have played in the Premier League for Chelsea.
Other top Nigerian players who have featured in the Premier League are the likes of Nwankwo Kanu, Jay-Jay Okocha, Joseph Yobo, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Alex Iwobi, Daniel Amokachi and a whole lot.
However, former Super Eagles defender, Sam Sodje has named former Chelsea left-back Celestine Babayaro as the greatest Nigerian to play in the Premier League.
“You have to give respect to likes of Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Efan Ekoku for scoring plenty goals and the players who played more 50 games in the premier league,” Sodje told Brila FM.
“So I give respect to Yobo, Mikel, but I won’t lie to the Nigerians who brought influence on premier are Babayaro and Kanu, but I love Babayaro and will say he’s the best.”
Babayaro spent eight years at Stamford Bridge after arriving from Belgian outfit Anderlecht and featured in 132 league games.
He left just before Chelsea’s Premier League title triumph in 2004, but was able to win the FA Cup, Uefa Cup Winners’ Cup and Uefa Super Cup with the Blues before joining Newcastle, where he spent three years.
