Chelsea have been pursuing Napoli forward Dries Mertens since January and had a move turned down earlier this season for the 32 year old Belgian.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has been in constant contact with the Belgian as the Blues look to seal a summer move for Mertens.

According to Daily Star, Chelsea look in danger of missing out on Mertens with soon-to-be mega-rich club Newcastle offering the Belgian a lucrative deal to snub Chelsea for Newcastle.

Newcastle are said to be willing to pay Dries Mertens more than £6m-a-year to lure him to St James’ Park.

Mertens’ Napoli contract expires at the end of the season and the Belgian hasn’t shown any willingness to extend his stay at Napoli.

Newcastle are reportedly prepared to table Mertens a two-year deal worth £6.1m-a-season.
