RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner is set to join Chelsea after agreeing a five year contract with the Blues.

The Blues were also interested in signing Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.

According to former USA international Herculez Gomez, Chelsea signing Timo Werner instead of Jadon Sancho is good news for Christian Pulisic.

Pulisic lost his place in the Borussia Dortmund team to Jadon Sancho before his transfer to Chelsea and Gomez believes Pulisic will be relieved Chelsea opted to sign Werner instead of Sancho.

“[I thought the Werner signing] was good news [for Pulisic], it was ‘thank God it wasn’t Jadon Sancho’ because that would have been something else, right,” Gomez told ESPN.

“That would have been ironic that again Jadon Sancho would come in and contend for his spot and probably end up taking it.

“I think Timo Werner is a great addition to Chelsea. I don’t think he will impact Christian Pulisic maybe as much as others will.

“I actually think Christian Pulisic’s going to be fine as long as he can stay healthy. He’s had that lingering injury in that groin area.

“As long as he can stay healthy, stay on the field, I think he’s going to be an important player for Chelsea.

“Timo Werner’s a fantastic player, doesn’t matter if you play him as a No 9 or if you play him on either flank.

“He’s got the ability to be dangerous anywhere he steps on the field, he’s that type of player.

“I think with Timo Werner, Christian Pulisic is part of that plan, he’s part of that dynamic trio if you will going forward.

“I don’t think anybody is moving Christian Pulisic, not with Willian leaving, not with Pedro leaving, not with just Timo Werner joining.

“As long as he’s healthy, I think Christian Pulisic’s going to play.”
