Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has been in hot pursuit of Napoli forward Dries Mertens to add some much-needed experience and depth to his youthful Chelsea team.
Mertens’ contract at Napoli is set to expire at the end of the season and the Blues are hoping to sign the 33 year old Belgian as a free agent.
According to Sky Sport Italia, Mertens is ready to sign a new contract with Napoli despite interest from Chelsea and Inter Milan.
The report claims Mertens is set to sign a new two year contract with Napoli which will see him pocket €4million in each of the next two seasons at Napoli, as well as €2.5m for signing the contract.
With Chelsea set to miss out on Mertens, Lampard will be happy the Blues are close to signing RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.
