Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek hasn’t featured for the Blues since rupturing his achilles in Chelsea’s end of season friendly against New England Revolution last May.
It has taken the 24-year-old midfielder up to a year to recover from the injury, and England boss Gareth Southgate has admitted that there was no way Loftus-Cheek would have gotten into the squad for the European Championship billed for this summer.
Southgate believes Loftus-Cheek had no chance to play for the national team this summer, but believes that he could be ready for next year.
“On moments of fate things do turn,” the manager told the Evening Standard.
“I was talking with Ruben Loftus-Cheek a few days ago, he’s been out for a year. No way would he have got back for a tournament like that.
“Who knows what the next 12 months might look like for him and other young players who might not have played in the Premier League yet, who might emerge in certain positions to provide competition for places.”
