Chelsea’s victory over Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night confirmed Liverpool as Premier League champions for the first time in 30 years.
A win for City would have further delayed Liverpool’s title celebration, but Chelsea beat City 2-1 in what was a tightly contested game.
While the win confirmed Liverpool as Premier League champions, it also ensured that the Blues maintain the momentum to make a Champions League spot finish by closing the gap on Leicester City in third place to just a point, and ensuring a five point gap ahead of Manchester United in fifth.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard had to remind journalist at the end of the game what the result really means to Chelsea.
“Thanks for asking. Nice to get a Chelsea question, although I appreciate tonight was a big night for Liverpool to win the title,” the Blues boss said, as quoted by Goal’s Nizaar Kinsella.
“We had to work a lot. The work ethic and focus. A big three points for us. It’s a nice result, should give us confidence.
“We were dangerous and had the better chances. It was a big game for us to get the three points.”
