Olivier Giroud scored the winner in Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday and marked his goal by taking to one knee and pointing to the heavens.
Olivier Giroud has now revealed the reasons behind his celebration against Aston Villa.
“It was just a tribute to George Floyd and Black Lives Matter, and also because I always point my fingers to the sky because I’m Christian,” Giroud told Chelsea’s official website.
“As a Christian I feel we live in a difficult time and I would love people to show more love to each other and eradicate this kind of hate.
“I want to stand for that, for that kind of cause, against racism, antisemitism, homophobia. I think it was important also that something came from a white guy.
“I think we should stick together and we need to show more respect and support, humility and love to each other.”
