Chelsea seem to have won a long running battle to sign RB Leipzig star Timo Werner.
Werner has caught the attention of top clubs in Europe, with Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea all rumoured to be interested in his services.
Liverpool were believed to be favourites for his signature, but Chelsea have jumped in front of the line to make the bold step for the in-form striker.
The Blues only had a few days to trigger the £49 million release clause in Timo Werner’s contract at RB Leipzig that runs until the summer of 2023.
The German’s buyout clause expires on June 15, and Chelsea might be forced to pay an astronomical fee for the German if it goes beyond June 15.
According to reports, Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger was the secret weapon Frank Lampard used to do the deal.
Rudiger played a crucial role in the deal having known Werner from their days at Stuttgart, as well as time spent on international duty.
According to German publication Bild, Rudiger has been in contact with his Germany team-mate throughout Chelsea’s courtship of the German forward.
Rudiger had talked up life in west London, and that has helped convinced Werner to make Chelsea his next move.
The striking position is one that Lampard was keen to strengthen ahead of next season, and with Chelsea confirming the signings of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, Blues fans can only be excited for next season.
