Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek hadn’t kicked a ball in a competitive game in 13 months, as he last played for the first team last May when he ruptured his achilles in Chelsea’s end of season friendly against New England Revolution.
Loftus-Cheek had impressed in training and Lampard decided to give him a starting opportunity. However, the 24-year-old looked rusty until he was taken off early in the second-half.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has admitted his delight to see Loftus-Cheek back after such a long time, but admitted that the academy product might need time before he’d return to his best.
“I am delighted for Ruben to be back in the fold,” he said. “He got in the team on his own merit with working well. In training, he has looked good and strong.
“We need to give him time to adapt. I thought it was a game for his physicality. There is more to come.”
