Chelsea have moved to trigger the release clause in Timo Werner’s contract with RB Leipzig and the 24-year-old is believed to have agreed personal terms with Chelsea. The forward is expected to sign a 5-year contract with the Blues that’ll see him earn wages of £200k per week.
According to The Athletic’s Raphael Honigstein, the only thing that is delaying the official confirmation of Timo Werner’s move to Chelsea is that it’s virtually impossible for the forward to undergo a medical.
Werner will likely come for medical after June 27 when the Bundesliga season ends. The most likely time when a medical can take place is after the Bundesliga season finishes on June 27.
Werner can’t travel to the UK due to Bundesliga’s regulations during the final part of the season. At the same time, the Chelsea representatives can’t go to Germany because they’d have to be quarantined for two weeks upon their return.
Werner has bagged 25 league goals this season for RB Leipzig, and many believe Tammy Abraham’s place in the starting XI is under threat.
According to The Athletic, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard intends to use Werner from the left wing with an encouragement to attack the penalty area at every opportunity.
Werner has played alongside Yussuf Poulsen, the 6ft 4in Denmark international who provides RB Leipzig with a more traditional focal point. Lampard reportedly intends to use Abraham and Werner in the same way.
