A win for Chelsea would have taken the Blues ahead of Leicester City in third place, and a draw wouldn’t have been too bad as Chelsea would have been level on points with Leicester City, but only behind on goal difference.

With Willian having scored a stunning free-kick to level the score, Andriy Yarmolenko scored a late counter-attack goal that earned West Ham a huge victory in their battle to avoid relegation.

Chelsea legend Ashley Cole who was one of the best during his playing days, has revealed his disappointment with Marcos Alonso’s defending for West Ham’s third goal.

“They’re going to be disappointed,” Ashley Cole said after the match.

“The thing I hate about full-backs is they’re happy to run forward but then not track back.

“I get that they’re pushing for a goal but you need a point here, a point would have been okay for Chelsea.

“Could he [Marcos Alonso] have got back quicker? Could he have recovered quicker? Probably, yes.

“As a team you need to want to work and Alonso needs to run back quicker.”

Former West Ham defender James Collins added: “Alonso never showed any desire to get back there.

“He’s willing to run forward but at no point does he get back. As a manger you’d be fuming with him.”
