Former Chelsea defender Nathan Ake had a season to forget, as his club Bournemouth were sent packing from the Premier League on the final day of the season.
The Cherries signed Ake on a permanent deal in the summer of 2017 for £20m, and the 25-year-old has grown to be one of the best defenders in the Premier League. To buttress Ake’s growth, Bournemouth were 14th in the league when Nathan Ake suffered a hamstring injury in December. When he returned one month later, the Cherries were 18th.
The centre-back position is one that Chelsea need to strengthen, and the Blues have been linked with a host of names. But one player that could play a huge role is Nathan Ake.
It is believed that Chelsea put a buyback clause of £40m in his deal, and reports claimed that it expired in January 2020.
Ake can bring both flair and solidity to the Chelsea defence – two things Frank Lampard is clamouring for from his defenders. The Netherlands international has an impressive 87.6 per cent passing accuracy in the Premier League this season.
Despite being only 5ft 11in, Ake ranks impressively for headed clearances and has also chipped in with 12 goals during his Premier League career, of which six have been headers. Stats also show that Bournemouth have conceded fewer goals with Ake in the team than without him.
With Bournemouth now having suffered relegation, the Cherries might be forced to sell him for a cut-fee.
