With Leicester City having lost to Everton earlier on, Chelsea missed a good chance to go beyond the Foxes in third place.
Willian had scored the opening goal for Chelsea from the spot, but Tomas Soucek equalised for West Ham on the stroke of half-time. Chelsea suffered a setback as the Blues conceded again shortly after the break with Michail Antonio tapping home for West Ham.
Willian scored a superb free-kick in the 72nd minute to ensure the game was all square heading into the final 20 minutes. With Chelsea looking for the final goal, Andriy Yarmolenko scored a late counter-attack goal that earned West Ham a huge victory in their battle to avoid relegation and weaken Chelsea’s opportunity to leap over Leicester City.
Manchester United legend Gary Neville blasted Marcos Alonso’s defending especially for the third goal, and was also critical of the performance of Antonio Rudiger.
“Look at him, look at him, look at him,” Neville said while commentating on the fixture for Sky Sports.
“What are you doing, Marcos Alonso? What are you doing? That’s his running back speed. It’s cost Chelsea the game, along with a poor piece of defending from [Antonio] Rudiger.
“Marcos Alonso is level with [Andriy] Yarmolenko when the counter-attack starts and he doesn’t bother.
“I mentioned it earlier. That’s why he’s under pressure at this football club. Frank Lampard will see that.
“Run back as fast as you can when you lose the ball, you learn that at the age of six.”
