Kurt Zouma returned to the starting line-up for the second league game in a row, and the Frenchman showed his quality in this game that helped Chelsea go home with the three points.
Zouma did enough to show Lampard that he deserves to start more, after another good day at the back, including a last ditch sliding tackle that prevented Christian Benteke from hurting Chelsea with the last kick of the game.
Palace hit the post in stoppage time, and Benteke was played clean through in the final moment of the game, only for Zouma to arrive out of nowhere with an incredible tackle at the last second.
Chelsea legend John Terry was pleased with Zouma’s tackle and praised his former teammate at the end of the game.
Responding to an Instagram post from Chelsea which described Zouma’s challenge as ‘absolute perfection’, Terry tagged Zouma and wrote: ‘What a tackle’.
Lampard admitted at the end of the game that he was pleased with the overall performance of Zouma, and admitted that his last ditch sliding tackle earned his team the three points.
Speaking at his post-match press conference, Lampard said: “It was fantastic from Kurt and I think at Watford he played a really good game as well.
“Imposing, great defending, good on the ball – and that’s everything I want.
“Defenders might not always get credit for those moments, the goalscorers get those, but his is definitely a points-saving tackle at the end, saves us two points. I’m really pleased with him.”
