Liverpool were believed to be favourites for the signing of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, but Chelsea hijacked the deal.
Liverpool legend John Barnes has in the past revealed that Werner won’t have broken into the Reds team, and speaking at Anfield on Wednesday night, Barnes again maintained that Liverpool don’t need Werner due to the strength of their front three.
Asked about Liverpool’s options ahead of the summer transfer window, Barnes told Sky Sports:
“I feel they should be strengthening the squad – not necessarily going out to buy a superstar like Chelsea have done with Timo Werner.
“Would Werner have been happy to come here and not play and cause problems because he wants to play?
“I don’t think we’re going to go and buy superstars. I think we’re going to go out and strengthen the squad, but if you look at our best XI, I don’t think they’re going to look to upset that.”
It would interest you to note that Barnes was keen on the deal when Liverpool were leading the race for his signature.
Next season will tell who made the better decision.
