Chelsea women have started the season on a high note after beating Manchester City women 2-0 to become Community Shield champions.

This traditional curtain-raiser is usually between the league champions and FA Cup holders. However, for this year, Chelsea women were champions with last season’s FA Cup unable to be completed. So 2019 FA Cup winners Manchester City stepped up to face Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

In a tightly contested first half, which saw City hit the post, the half ended in a goalless draw.

Both sides continued to miss chances early in the second half, until the dismissal of Manchester City’s Jill Scott, ensured Chelsea take control of the game.

Four minutes after the dismissal of Scott, centre-back Millie Bright struck a shot from distance that flew into the top corner.

Substitute Erin Cuthbert sealed the win for Chelsea with a fine finish in stoppage time after the ball fell invitingly for her an easy goal in the 92nd minute.

The Blues women have now started the 2020-21 season in bright fashion.
