Former England international Darren Bent has played down the excuse made for Frank Lampard in his use of youngsters this past season.
The Chelsea legend gave up to eight Blues academy youngsters their debut this season, with the likes of Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Reece James, Fikayo Tomori, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Billy Gilmour playing more prominent roles.
Meanwhile, Bent has now said that Lampard was left with no choice but to use the youngsters and hinted that he might not be afforded such opportunity next season when Chelsea make massive signings.
“A lot of people have lauded Frank Lampard for the job he’s done this season. He’s brought through the youngsters… but he was forced to do this,” Darren Bent told talkSPORT.
“At times people have made excuses for him; yeah he’s given them [academy players] an opportunity and they’ve taken it, but I do think that next season is going to be completely different.
“Are they going to sign all these players, will the youth players get more opportunities next season?
“That’s going to be pressure in itself because the people in authority will be like ‘hold on, you were forced to do it last season, where are the youngsters this season?’
“It’s an open chequebook, they can sign whoever they want. Are these players still going to get the opportunities?”
