Despite Chelsea’s struggles at the back and the availability of Nathan Ake following the relegation of Bournemouth, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard isn’t interested in signing the former Chelsea defender.
Considering Chelsea’s defensive record this season, several Chelsea fans are surprised the Blues aren’t making a move for Nathan Ake despite having an option to bring him back to Stamford Bridge.
According to Football London, Lampard has no desire to sign Ake because the Holland international won’t improve Chelsea aerially.
Standing at 5-foot-11, Ake isn’t the dominant aerial presence Lampard wants at Chelsea. Out of 50 central defenders to have played over 1,500 minutes in the Premier League this season, Ake is placed 49th for aerial duel success (%).
While Lampard acknowledges Ake is a brilliant football, he believes the defender isn’t what Chelsea need at the moment.
Chelsea have conceded too many goals from set-pieces this season and Lampard believes having defenders good in the air will solve that.
